Director of AI and Data Science Product Development [USA- Remote]

AURA Technologies is seeking a driven, product-focused Director of AI & Data Science Product Development [USA - Remote] to lead the creation and deployment of advanced AI/ML-powered solutions. This fully remote position blends strategic vision, technical leadership, and team oversight to bring innovative AI/ML products to market in complex, data-rich domains.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: We’re looking for a leader with a proven track record of launching AI-enabled products or product features, ideally in sectors such as engineering, infrastructure, energy, aerospace, transportation, medical/healthcare, or advanced manufacturing. This person should be entrepreneurial, technically knowledgeable, and skilled at managing both product innovation and sustained delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and articulate a vision for AURA’s AI/ML portfolio.
  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of AI/ML-powered product development—from inception, through development, to release and iteration.
  • Lead the AI/ML product strategy, working as a bridge to ensure that the objectives of the technical team align with commercialization and business strategy.
  • Meet with potential government and commercial customers to create new business opportunities and direct the work of the AI/ML team in response to customer signals.
  • Add to AURA’s innovation portfolio by making sure that AI/ML products meet customer needs in ways that are technologically novel and support IP expansion.
  • Ensure the AI/ML team consistently delivers high-quality, on-time work, particularly for government-funded projects (e.g., DoD, DOE); while a team lead may manage day-to-day execution, you will be ultimately accountable for technical quality and delivery.
  • Develop maintainable AI/ML solutions to address real-world customer problems, collaborating with a range of stakeholders throughout the process.
  • Guide the team in designing and automating data science workflows, including data ingestion, cleaning, validation, model development, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Partner with product and business teams to guide development that balances market demand, strategic goals, and innovation.
  • Build and mentor a team of data scientists and engineers, promoting a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Drive continuous improvement and adoption of modern AI/ML practices, infrastructure, and tools, ensuring the AI/ML team is in line with industry best-practices.
  • Support marketing, sales, and proposal development with clear, strategic communication of AI/ML value propositions.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to apply AI/ML in domains such as predictive maintenance, diagnostics, signal processing, computer vision, and health data analytics.

WORK EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Required Qualifications

  • Product Delivery: Demonstrated success bringing AI-powered or data science-driven products to market or into operational use.
  • Industry Relevance: Experience applying AI/ML to real-world problems in engineering, infrastructure, energy, aerospace, transportation, healthcare, or advanced manufacturing (ideally in more than one).
  • Leadership: 5+ years leading data science or AI teams; experience balancing team mentoring with accountability for technical delivery.
  • Technical Proficiency: Must have a strong background in using Python or similar languages; comfortable with distributed data platforms and AI frameworks (e.g., Spark, Databricks, PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Communication: Excellent oral and written communicator who can translate complex algorithms and results into actionable insights for technical and non-technical stakeholders alike. (Applicants may be asked to provide a technical writing sample.)
  • Autonomy: Self-starter with an ability to lead, problem-solve, and execute on tasks without constant oversight. This is critical for seeking new avenues for development.

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (PhD preferred but not required).

Preferred:

  • Prior experience delivering on U.S. government contracts (DoD, DOE, NIH, etc.).
  • Publications or patents in machine learning, diagnostics, AI systems, or analytics platforms.
  • Familiarity with regulated environments (e.g., FDA, HIPAA) or standards relevant to health or industrial systems.
